One hundred and sixty kilometres of superb Algarve beaches, clear blue water and sports of every kind. Southern Portugal and the area around Faro have a distinct Mediterranean feel.
It is here that you can still se brightly painted fishing boats land their catches on the quayside following a way of life that occupied much of this area before the onset of tourism. It was from here that many of the great discoverers such as Vasco da Gama set sail and established Portugal's reputation as a seafaring nation of intrepid explorers and conquerors.
Inland, cork plantations dominate the agriculture but the coastline is the real reason that people return here again and again. The topography changes as the coastline traces the transition from dramatic Atlantic towards warm Mediterranean. West of Faro, the beaches are a succession of small coves and tiny bays, fringed with fantastic rock formations, at their most impressive around Lagos. To the east there are a series of sandy islands, the Ilhas, which protect the beaches and the water there can feel warmer.
Water sports of all varieties can easily be found on most of the main beaches. Children are welcome pretty much anywhere including the cafes and restaurants. There are also several water parks along the Algarve coast between Faro and Portimao.
Take a day out in the countryside. The forested slopes of the Monchique hills are shady and fragrant with eucalyptus, and the scenic route up to Roia, the Algarve's highest point (902m) ends with magnificent views. Visit the fortified village of Silves, the old Moorish capital, and be tempted by the exquisite lacework. Or take in the ancient city of Faro, with its ancient walled quarter. Enjoy the wonderful views from the lighthouse at Cape St Vincent, the most southwesterly point of Europe.
For those in search of sport to offset their relaxation, the Algarve comes highly recommended. Vale de Lobo is home to the David Lloyd Tennis Centre and several challenging golf courses. Vilamoura too has over 50 tennis courts and some world ranking golf. Portugal is also one of the last places in Europe where you can still go big game fishing for shark and tuna if you really fancy the idea of setting the chef a serious challenge!
